Surgical/GI lab procedures

Advocate Children's Hospital Esophageal Center provides the most advanced surgical-GI lab procedures available to diagnose and treat your child.

This test helps us determine the strength of the muscles in your child’s esophagus. It’s useful in evaluating any swallowing abnormalities.

A thin plastic tube is guided into your child’s nostril, then passed into the throat and finally into the esophagus. The pressure the esophageal muscles produce with contraction and relaxation is then measured.

An esophageal pH monitor allows us to measure the acidity inside of the esophagus.

We use it to help diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A thin plastic tube is placed into a nostril, guided down the throat and into the esophagus. The tube stops just above the lower esophageal sphincter, which is at the connection between the esophagus and the stomach.

A sensor at one end of the tube measures pH, or acidity. The other end of the tube, outside the body, is connected to a monitor that records the pH levels for a 12- to 24-hour period.

We encourage normal activity during the study. You’ll be asked to keep a diary of symptoms experienced or symptoms that might indicate reflux, such as gagging or coughing.

The pH readings are evaluated and compared to your child's activity for that period.

This test allows us to measure the amount and frequency of pH levels in your child’s esophagus.

A miniature pH capsule (the size of a gelcap) is attached to your child's esophagus during endoscopy.

The capsule transmits information to a small receiver worn on a belt or waistband for 48 hours. A diary is provided for writing down the times there are reflux symptoms when eating or lying down.

EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy), also called upper endoscopy, is a procedure that allows us to have a look inside the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.

During an endoscopy, a thin, flexible, lighted tube is gently guided into your child’s mouth and throat, then into their esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

We use the endoscope to view the inside of your child’s intestine as well as to insert instruments for the removal of a sample of tissue for biopsy (if necessary).

Capsule endoscopy enables us to completely examine all portions (duodenum, jejunum, ileum) of your child’s small intestine.

We use a video capsule about the size of a vitamin pill which has its own camera and light source.

While the capsule travels through your child’s body, images are sent to a data recorder your child wears on a belt for approximately 8 hours.
