About the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

  • The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a partnership between Advocate Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana to provide primary health care to uninsured children in the areas of greatest need.
  • The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile at Advocate Children’s Hospital provides free primary healthcare services for low-income children in underserved communities.
  • Pediatric and adolescent healthcare services provided on the Care Mobile include physicals, immunizations, sick-child visits and health education, as well as diagnosis, treatment, referral and follow-up for chronic illnesses for children who otherwise may not receive health care.
  • Care Mobile is 40 feet long, 8 feet wide and incorporates two patient exam rooms, a reception area and a medical records area. The Care Mobile operates four days a week, as well as occasional Saturdays, particularly in the late-summer months, when children need immunizations and/or physicals for the coming school year.
  • A high percentage of families in the communities served by the Care Mobile are low-income. The greatest barrier to health care for this population is the unaffordable costs of care. Even if a family has health insurance, they may have difficulties affording high co-pays, as well as needed medications. For families with public health insurance, they may find it difficult to access a healthcare provider who will accept their insurance. If they do gain access, they may have to travel long distances, and may feel unwelcome. Due to these obstacles, they are less likely to regularly visit a primary care physician, and may rely more on area hospital emergency rooms. The Care Mobile alleviates these challenges by bringing free treatment and prevention services to underserved communities within the program’s service area.
  • With the help of philanthropy, here’s the impact the Care Mobile has been able to have since its inception in 2008:
    • 7,357 children received services at 387 grammar schools, 133 high schools and 88 health fairs and community events
    • 9,319 vaccinations
    • 7,110 physicals
    • 1,764 referrals to primary care doctors
    • 421 referrals to dentists
    • 83 referrals to specialists
    • 649 referrals to optometrists
  • The cost for a visit for one child is $125.
  • Physical examinations are required for entry to school:
    • Entering preschool and kindergarten up to age 6 (physical exam and lead screen)
    • Entering the State of Illinois for the first time at any grade level
    • Entering kindergarten, 6th grade or 9th grade (ages 5, 11 and 15 for un-graded programs)
